The adventurers are exploring the dungeon. They loot corpses, rummage around in old chests and urns, and search for secret treasure caches. But what are they going to find? There’s the main plot MacGuffin they’re searching for, maybe a few seriously dope magical items and a couple shitty ones, and then you’re just rolling on a table of vaguely worthless but interesting-sounding loot.
And then there’s these. Treasures that link the current adventure to a potential future adventure – items that hint at a larger and stranger world than the one the adventurers know.
There are 8 different treasures listed below. Use them in your adventures, or just use them as inspiration for your own unique treasures. The items are broken up into three categories:
- Straightforward items that clearly indicate another adventure/quest
- Items that add a complication to the existing adventure/the world, but don’t suggest a specific adventure
- Strange items that provide lore about the world – if the adventurers follow up on them
Treasure List
- A treasure map in a map case. Do they recognise the area in the map, or is it somewhere new to them? Where is the map case – in a locked chest, tucked out of sight under a cabinet, or in the clutches of a skeleton?
- The signet ring of a local noble. How did it get here? Will the noble reward them for bringing it back? Can they use it to cause mischief before then?
- The corpse of a local noble that the adventurers saw very recently. Who did they really see, or is the corpse the fake?
- The skull of an animal that the adventurers don’t recognise. Have they discovered something new? Who would be able to tell them? Does anyone know what it is?
- An art object or magical item that’s hard to sell for its full value. Where can they sell it? Does anyone in the nearby town know of a likely buyer? Why won’t anyone nearby buy it – too valuable, too strange, too unwanted?
- A cursed weapon with a strong magical power. If they break the curse, will it retain its beneficial magic? Is it even possible to break the curse, and if so, how can they do it?
- A statue or painting of an unknown deity. Who is it? Are there forgotten temples nearby? If the adventurers find it, will they be blessed by the deity?
- A coded letter, a puzzle box that needs a decoder, half of a strange relic that radiates power – something that will clearly reveal something important but is missing a crucial part. Will the adventurers go out of their way to track down the other half, and if so, what will they find?
