Continue reading “Dream a Little Dream”Another short story written for the writing workshop I attended in uni. A lot of the weekly prompts we got were very normal (love, time, etc), but I basically turned them all into stories about magic.
Continue reading “To Bring Someone Back”I wrote this short story for a writing workshop in uni. Each week we had to write a 500-word story based on a prompt and present it in class… totally nerve-wracking the first few times, but the group environment was great. I’d love to find another workshop like that.
Continue reading “Thistlewitch”The adventurers are exploring an ancient dungeon, filled to the brim with secret rooms, magical treasures, dangerous enemies, and, of course, fiendish traps.
But what traps will you throw at them? What can you use that they haven’t seen a hundred times already? Here are ten new types of traps, with examples of each type. They’re system-neutral, so you can sneak them into any game you play.
Continue reading “Traps traps traps! Ten Traps!”Sometimes playing D&D or other RPGs can start to feel stale, even when the adventures are exciting. Here are some fun and easy ways to make your RPG session feel more interactive and immersive for your players.
I’ve broken them down into two categories: in-game and out of game items. I’ve focused on very cheap (or free) things, but if you have the budget, you can always look for upgrades.

Troika, if you haven’t heard of it before, is a seriously dope fever-dream of a science-fantasy RPG where you zip through dimensional portals between worlds strung like crystal orbs in the sky, battling strange monsters to complete even stranger quests. The main website is here, and you can get a physical copy here, and a digital copy here.
In Troika, your character starts with a background that sums up who they were before the game. These backgrounds include skill points, special abilities, and starting items. Since Troika spans multiple planes of existence, these backgrounds can get pretty bizarre. Here are three new ones for your game: the scholar king, the bewildered angel, and the crotchety witch.

Your kingdom crumbled long ago, and you live in an ancient castle surrounded by ancient books about ancient times. But you’ve left that all behind for the chance for new experiences, new places, & new knowledge. You still wear your crown, but you have no desire to be in power again. Thrones are for the young, and perhaps one day you’ll help some young prophesied ruler find theirs.
You may Test your Luck to read something immediately useful from your scrolls.

On the planet you hail from, you are regarded as an angel. Bewinged, behaloed, bewildered at the strange sights and new worlds you are now discovering. Are you on a mission from your god to bring your holy light to the new worlds? Or are you searching for a way to keep your god contained?
You have a flight speed as fast as a typical human running.

You’ve left your magical house and familiars behind to embark on a dark and dangerous quest. You’ve foreseen dark days ahead and only someone with your powers can keep the multiverse safe. Or perhaps you’ve sensed an incredibly powerful magical artefact and want to add it to your collection.
You have a method of unusual transport – eg: a flying cauldron, enormous tiger, hat with wings, etc.
I have another set of Troika backgrounds in the works, then I’ll be putting them together into a little pamphlet zine you can download over on my itch.io page (link in the header). So keep an eye out! If you want to be notified of all my posts, I recommend following me on Twitter or following this blog directly using the sidebar tool.

The adventurers are exploring the dungeon. They loot corpses, rummage around in old chests and urns, and search for secret treasure caches. But what are they going to find? There’s the main plot MacGuffin they’re searching for, maybe a few seriously dope magical items and a couple shitty ones, and then you’re just rolling on a table of vaguely worthless but interesting-sounding loot.
And then there’s these. Treasures that link the current adventure to a potential future adventure – items that hint at a larger and stranger world than the one the adventurers know.
Continue reading “8 Treasures That Spark New Adventures”This is a micro-RPG I wrote for the 200 Word RPG Challenge in 2019. You can find the actual entry here. I wrote this based on the 1976 song by Thin Lizzy, “The Boys Are Back In Town”. On first listen it’s a totally normal song, but pay attention to the lyrics…they’re telling an unusual story. I started having questions like, who are these boys? Or rather, what are they?
Continue reading “The Boys Are Back In Town”I wrote this in response to the Cure Light Wounds Jam on twitter/itch.io (as found here) but never actually submitted it to the jam. So it can live here on my blog!
(I did tweet it here during the jam)
